And just when you thought Beck wasn’t cool anymore, he went
and did something like this…and totally
redeemed himself! Well not that Beck’s rep really needed any sort of
redemption, but closing his sold-out kind-of-secret show at the Element in Los
Angeles by rhyming over a funky mash-up—which included his own “Hell Yes”, David
Bowie’s “Fame”, Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”, Prince’s “Erotic City”,
Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body”, and probably several other songs that we
missed in all the excitement—surely reminded the Hollywood crowd that, as a
white boy, you don’t have to be Eminem or Marky Mark to spit slick lines. Donning
a pink collared shirt under a Tom Petty-like black vest/pants/fedora combo, Beck
captivated the suped-up warehouse’s audience with a set of mostly new tracks
from his Oct. 3 release, The Information,
as well as a few choice tracks from Sea
Change and Guero. Ignoring the
bar’s bustling waitresses and pushy security guards, the night’s highlights included
a peppy rendition of “Paper Tiger”, the pounding “Nausea”, and of course
“Girl”. On stage, Beck performed with a sense of honesty behind his songs, and
while there were no puppets or onstage dinner parties, if this casual attitude
is what we can continue to expect from Beck, well so be it; because it’s always
been the music first, then the gimmicks.
