Coachella 2008 - Complete Lineup Announced
Well, there it is folks- the complete, official lineup for Coachella 2008. (Click image to see larger version.) Upon the reveal, overheard commentary at Filter HQ includes, but is not limited to, in no particular order:
1. Jack Johnson?... Wait, really?...Umm...
2. Who the hell are some of these bands?
3. Justice, two years in a row. Is that the first time an act has played Coachella in back-to-back years? Interesting.
4. Are they saving the best headliners for the inaugural East Coast version of Coachella? If Radiohead is playing, count us on team New York.
Overall feeling: underwhelmed and remembering the days of Pixies reunions in the desert.
Leave your thoughts below.

all of those thoughts crossed my head. and then cried when my bloody valentine was not on the list. boooooooo
seems like coachelle is going in a different 'direction' musically.

Way to underwhelm me Coachella. Sure, I'll go, and get hot, and sweaty, and dehydrated, but I won't like it.
Some of those "top billers" are pathetic! Show me someone I can't see any day of the week in Los Angeles.
I could list the trash bands on that list, but I have to get back to work.

no need for adults across the world to call off work on Friday.

hang on, it's not that bad it's just that a lot of the more interesting bands are in fine print lost in amongst the long list. obviously Jack Johnson in SoCal is not particularly 'exlusive' but guess we can't have The Pixies reforming every year (we DO get The Breeders though!)

I was at the radiohead coachella and have attended every year since. Other than that year, has it ever been about the headliners? Isn't filter mag about more unknown bands? So why the hater-ade? I can count 20+ bands i wanna see each day.
i hope no one shows up, it has been to packed the past couple years anyways.
that being said, will be interesting to see what the other festivals announce.

Animal Collective is gonna kill it... so will Jens, Battles, Annie Clark, and MGMT.
The headliners are definitely underwhelming, but the under-card is totally solid.

i agree jack johnson is malapropos, but a lot of the smaller bands are solid. i'm excited to see santogold, mgmt, diplo, tegan and sara, rilo kiley, nypc, cool kids, and the black kids. also, coachella better be able to top roger waters performing dark side of the moon next year. what could they possibly do next?

I recommend checking out one of the unknown bands that is playing on Day 2. They're called Electric Touch. Britpop from Austin TX. Lead singer was previously a member of Nic Armstrong and The Thieves/IV Thieves. You can preview 2 tunes here : http://www.myspace.com/electrictouchmusic

Hot Chip played last year too, same with Gogol Bordello (who I missed due to the Faithless/Bjork conflicts), and Spank Rock (who got the shaft and had to play during Rage). So I'm actually really happy that these acts are returning.
After initially being pissed about Jack Johnson, I'm now excited and looking forward to one less conflict on Friday night!

truly under whelmed...seems like that's the national consensus. 75% of these bands have played LA within the past 6 months and under much better circumstances might i add. i'd much rather remember these performances in small local venues rather than sweaty tents occupied by a bunch of bro'd out jack johnson fans. let's go to europe! where music festivals are still curated by and for true music connoisseurs and not completely by demographics.

Day two is the only good lineup.
Rilo Kiley, Death Cab, Bird and the Bee, and Grand Ole Party.
But I agree that I don't want to see them with thousands of other people. Plus, the fact that they're playing isn't surprising, since RK and GOP are southern california bands.
I still find it awesome, though.

Are you people kidding me? Stop being such snobs. The Verve and Portishead and 100 other good bands are playing and all you can do is pick on Jack Johnson?
You should be stoked you get to leave early on Friday before all the stoned surf-jocks and be sleeping snug in your bed while they're trying to figure out how to get out of the parking lot.

there are some great bands like Tegan and Sara(who i love), The National, Stars, AIH..Metric,GOP , Rilo Kiley...
and the're some i dont really know who they are..
but WTF with Jack Johnson???
Posted by: Alejandra | Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 02:31 PM
The headliners are underwhelming, and Jack Johnson is a total "WTF?!"
BUT, I must say that overall, the lineup is very good. Each of the 3 days has a handful of bands I'm excited to see. I'll be there all three days.
That's what Coachella has always been about for me anyway... let the masses camp out for the headliners, I'll be over here in the small tents getting my mind blown by an act I've never seen before

This would make two years in a row that I don't care about going... which is good since I'm in a wedding that weekend anyway. If only Dredg, Autolux, My Morning Jacket, Metric, the Bird and the Bee, and Roger Waters were all playing on Friday instead. I do wonder what's up with Jack Johnson as the headliner for Friday. I won't trash his music, but I will question the reason to why they couldn't get someone bigger to headline. Portishead's reunion is a big deal, but am I naive about how big they really were? Are they really headliner-worthy too?
Posted by: Ace | Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 02:52 PM
how is Jack Johnson headlining over The Verve??? Bloody hell!
Posted by: richard a. | Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 03:25 PM
the large majority of these smaller bands people are championing have played several times in southern california over the last few months, which is why the disappointing headliners contribute to an even more underwhelming feeling. i mean, sure, a large part of coachella is the beautiful desert atmosphere...but when you add up how much it costs to attend (tickets, lodging, transportation, etc)...it is nowhere near worth that value. i'll save my hundreds of dollars and head east this year for a festival that draws a better lineup. easy decision.

Disappointed like everyone else. Too bad they couldn't pull a Pink Floyd reunion.

Posted by: | Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 04:39 PM
casi no me emporta las bandas menos Porter, Cafe Tacvba, y Austin TV. Gracias a dios que la falta de talento en la lista sera compensada por estas tres bandas. la pura neta!
