Indie Music And Car Ads

175chevymalibu

So it seems these days like indie music and car commercials go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Often they can seem like polar opposites – the sterile metal versus the heartfelt strumming - but the car companies worked out that they can use the all the emotion contained in a good song to give the cars the personality they are lacking. Need to bring some humanity and warmth to a stark production line? Soundtrack your ad with Oren Lavie’s “Her Morning Elegance,” like Chevy did with their new Malibu commercial. Want your car for be fun and sporty? Go with The Go! Team’s “Huddle Formation” like the Honda Civic. Need to appeal to a more rock n’ roll demographic? Try Kings Of Leon, “Molly’s Chambers” like the VW Jetta. Here’s our examples:

VW Jetta - Kings Of Leon, “Molly’s Chambers”

There’s more of our favorites after the jump, but what do you think? What are your favorites?

Nissan Murano - Great Northern, “Home”

Nic Armstrong and The Thieves - "Down Home Girl"

Their cover of "Down Home Girl" was used for a Honda Ridgeline ad in 2006.

it's kind of ironic because "indie" usually has the connotation of being not selling out, and there's all this talk of appropriation BUT an artist's gotta eat...

aww, remember when Polyphonic Spree were in a car commercial??

awww the VW commercials just ask for indie music...esp the jetta. its totally the indie car.

anyone ever notice the outback steakhouse rip of of montreal. Weird I wonder if they had to get permission?

EVERYTIME I listen to "You talk way to much"
I think "Play Artist: The Strokes"
because of that damn sync commercial!

[to miroomny]

yes, when I first heard that commercial i was like huh!?

"Wraith Pinned "

WTF!

Mo money, mo problems.

Let's not forget these wise words, Kings of Leon.

of montreal licensed it to them knowing they were going to change it around.
